Agressive Music

Thy Infernal have quite the reputation among many underground circles and they have earned a slight bit of respect from me for their consistent musicianship as well. This being said, the band is hardly doing anything that interesting or unique. Thy Infernal are the classic "we’re hill to slay Jesus" kind of blokes who seem convinced of their hatred and this carries the record from being another stale retread to actually sounding somewhat vibrant. You can’t have originality all the time, and when you just want some good-ole’ face stomping black metal…Thy Infernal might just stroke your hell’s kitchen into a blaze. It’s hard for me to admit, but this release is pleasing on a very base level that I can say little to justify on an artistic level.

The songs themselves range from skilled "blast-a-thons" to militant moments that provide a needed break from the hammering/unrelenting crash-beats. None of these songs will grab you and make you dance through the cemetary humming the riffs as a "Funeral Fog" would but it’s good enough to not be listed as "bad". Sadly, the innovation factor is close to nil and this will only appeal to those who want more of the same that is currently dominating the black metal underground. Even I will dig this when I’m in the right mood, but I can hardly endorse it as a large artistic victory of any kind.

In the early 90s bands like Beherit and Blasphemy were playing some of the most brutal music ever heard in the underground. But things were also happening in the East and in 1992 Impiety unleashed Formidonis Nex Cultus upon an unsuspecting world. With this demo the band proved that they were a force to be reckoned with. Aside from the Blasphemy and Beherit influence I also hear influences from the old Colombian death metal horde Masacre. Another band that must be mentioned as a musical reference here is Archgoat. If you’re an Archgoat fan and haven’t heard this demo, then you are really missing out. Hell, Formidonis Nex Cultus is a total massacre and it gave the more established acts of the genre at the time a run for their money.

Shyaithan’s vocal vomits on this demo are damn great, vicious raspy growls that sound as if they’re coming straight from the depths of hell itself. He sounds as if possessed by evil demons, spewing forth one blasphemous curse after another. He’s also added backing growls and screams every now and then to make the most impact. Formidonis Nex Cultus is the most horrifying thing Impiety ever recorded and I personally hope that this demo will be re-released officially as I’m sure many fans into totally extreme mayhem would appreciate it.

Deicide is the killing of a god: either the God of a monotheistic religion, or one of the gods of a polytheistic religion.

Well, this is the pinnacle of Satanic Death Metal. This album stands alone atop the pedestal of pure EviL. What more could be said that hasn’t been said already. Deicide features the most diabolic and evil musician in the music recording business. I’m talking of course about Glen Benton, the heavily anti-Christian bassist/vocalist of Deicide.(Easily identifiable as the one with the inverted cross branded into his forehead!)

Each song is jammed packed with Glen’s unique brand of lyrics many of which suggest the killing of Christians and desecration of everything religious. The music on the album is raw, fast, heavy, evil and last but not least, superb. One aspect of the album worth noting is the excellent double-bass drum work by Steve Asheim and the viciously fast guitar work by the brothers Eric and Brian Hoffman.

"Nightwing" was the fourth album by Marduk that I got to know and besides "World Funeral" it is my favourite up to date. It was the first time that I found an album of a Black Metal band truely epic and hymnic without them using a keyboard or an orchestra. They are using just three instruments and with them they are creating an evil, dark atmosphere that graps you by the throat and holds you there until the end of the last track.

This album accomplishes using the standard black metal topics, such as killing Jesus, blasphemy, sacrifice, etc. and makes it feel fresh and refined. In my personal opinion the lyrics at times seem pretty poetic. The overall sound of the music is dark, fast, aggressive, and evil, the way it should be. With only drums, a bass, and a guitar, the sound is darkened and ambient. The riffs and drumming are a rapid chain of beautiful explosions to the ears. Also, this is one of the few black metal bands that actually makes the bass audible, and I myself being a bass player find that pretty sweet.

The album opens with an intro track that sounds like a dying symphony before launching into blasting fury with three of the best Marduk tracks recorded; Including Slay the Nazarene, a live favourite of the band and audiences alike, with its raging riffing and throat tearing chorus. These songs are only loosely connected with the main concept of the album however, which begins with the title track.

What follows is simply jaw dropping dark brooding black metal of the highest order. Reading through the lyrics is a haunting expierience in itself as Legion grates and growls his way through the historical horrors of the man’s life.

Yes, armageddon is coming on earth…or better to say, it’s the impression you have by listening this album. Well, that could be seen as well as positive as negative. In the case of Nargaroth it’s definitively positive. This german band released here its masterpiece. This album is in my opinion the best of their already long career.

Nargaroth’s Black Metal Ist Krieg is an awesome album that every Black Metal fan should check out, it’s definitely worth owning. Each song on this release is full of emotions, sadness, hatred and misanthropy. The guitar riffs and the vocals are depressive but beautiful at the same time and Kanwulf really expresses his thoughts through his music, that’s what makes this album so great. In the booklet, Kanwulf tells us a few things about his past and comments on every song. That’s pretty interesting to read (if you understand German :p).

I think. It’s an album of new material, but it’s not a concept album like "Herbstleyd"; in fact, it feels like even more of a mixed bag than "Amarok" was as there is a wide range of material on here. Four covers and six new originals make up this 70-minute disc, and the styles cover almost the entire gamut of approaches to black metal. Bookending this album are two songs in the purest spirit of black metal, "Black Metal Ist Krieg" and "Possessed by Black Fucking Metal". Both are streamlined, simple, aggressive songs dripping with hatred.

FUCKING AWSOME ALBUM!!!

"Diabolis Interium" was meant to strike me without warning, a black lightning summoned up from darkest depths aimed at my Metal heart. This album has something about it that I just can’t put my finger on. I know that it’s a wonderful album in atmosphere, music and vocals, but there’s something more. It’s almost like a good concept album (which, in a way it is, like most black metal albums… it’s about all things satanic and blasphemous). The smooth running just blew me away.Maybe I’m overating Dark funeral’s "Diabolis interium", but that’s the way I see it: It’s their best album.
Blast beats and satanic lyrics from start to end, that may seem boring to some people, but that’s the way I think black metal must be: it must have no rules.
"The Arrival of Satan’s Empire" is the high-speeded opener for this mind blowing album, and one of the best, I must say. Excellent guitar melodies, and killer blast beats.

KATHARSIS is the best black metal band I’ve heard in a long time. Having done splits with other highly praised bands in the genre such as MOONBLOOD and BLACK WITCHERY, you can expect nothing less than a flat-out amazing release from this band, and 666 delivers,This is one of those rare black metal albums that actually made me feel the essence or spirit of true stripped down "necro" black metal. Yes this album truly has atmosphere, releasing a dark aura every time I play it
